Continuing ACC and Christie’s successful partnership, Liu Kuo-sung's Untitled was auctioned at the 20th and 21st Century Art Afternoon Session on May 25th. The auction featured international works by Christie’s selection of “some of the most sought-after artists of the moment.” This 1966 piece by the “father of modern Chinese ink painting” was no exception, selling at HKD$812,500,* well above the estimated price.
The piece exemplifies Liu Kuo-sung's versatile combination of abstract expressionism and traditional Chinese ink painting techniques, and holds particular significance within the timeline of ACC and the artist’s relationship. 1966 marks a beginning and an end—it is both the work’s date of completion and the start of Liu’s two-year ACC fellowship researching contemporary art in the United States. Today, the partnership continues. Following the success of this auction, proceeds will support fellowships, grants, and educational opportunities for the next generation of visionary art leaders.
